Qualifications: 

  • I am currently an adjunct professor at Lehman College. 
  • I co-authored a textbook on Periodization with Tudor Bompa. 
  • I have been a lifelong athlete involved in sports like wrestling, American football, Rugby, and martial arts. 
  • I have coached Men's and Women's collegiate Rugby. 
  • I have served as a Division I strength coach covering a variety of sports. 

Hobbies and Interests: 

  • I love walking and adventuring with my dogs. 
  • I love all things nerdy - comic books, video games, anime, sci-fi, fantasy, dungeons and dragons - you name it! 
  • I love spending time outside hiking, riding UTVs, snowboarding, shooting, being a part time lumberjack, river floating, and paddle-boarding. 
  • I also really love traveling

Why Choose James: 

I have had the privilege of being an instructor and a coach in numerous capacities throughout my career. I really enjoy paying forward everything I have learned about fitness and sport to students, athletes, and people trying to reach their fitness goals. I can work with anyone, whether they are a complete beginner or an advanced athlete. I am happy to meet people where they are and give them the best guidance I can. 

My goals as a coach are to help expand my clients knowledge, skills, and abilities relating to their fitness goals. A large part of that is helping them understand the tradeoffs and compromises needed between the lifestyle they would like to live, and their fitness goals. I always want to give my clients the respect of an autonomous adult who can ultimately make their own decisions, and my role is to help guide and align those decisions towards their short and long term goals. 

I am very big into promoting mindfulness strategies to deal with the inevitable discomforts of hard diet and training. I want my clients to be aware of the thoughts, feelings, and physical sensations they will be dealing with and to become increasingly adept at managing them. I try my best to give honest feedback that is thoughtful, supportive, and respectful. Even in less than ideal circumstances, I want my clients to know that I am on their side and trying to point them in what I believe to be the best path forward towards progress.

Great coach for diet and strength

"I’ve had a great experience working with James so far. He is extremely knowledgeable, well informed, and clearly very experienced in dieting and strength training. One thing that stood out immediately is how quickly he responds through email, even on weekends. We have also had a few calls, and in less than two weeks I am already seeing noticeable results in both weight loss and strength. He does a great job of cutting through all the noise and giving clear, educated, and practical guidance. You can tell he is very well versed in the topic. James is also a great person and an excellent listener. He takes the time to answer my questions thoughtfully and has been willing to tailor both the diet and training plan to my personal needs and goals. "James is awesome! He clearly knows what he is doing and my results speak for themselves. I tried bulking and cutting on my own, but wasn’t happy with the results. James put me in the right track and I saw results almost immediately. His training and diet plans were simple to understand and easy to follow. The rest is on you to put in the work! I plan on working with James for the foreseeable future so I can keep adding muscle but also staying lean."

The right coach is critical

"Anyone looking to truly level up training to make meaningful positive changes in overall composition should look at coaching. Speaking from experience having any coach will not do it though. It is critical you have the right coach. RP coaching is top notch, you cannot go wrong. They cut through the industry noise and work with you to pave the most efficient path to your fitness goals. Fantastic coach. I am almost

"Fantastic coach. I am almost 4 months currently in fat loss phase. Very informative I like the fact that he answers all of your questions with both evidence-based and anecdotal evidence. Also has a sense of humor and is pretty laid back. This is also helping me in my medical practice being able to give good and proper sound advice to my patients as typically physicians are not usually well versed in the field of diet and exercise. I do highly recommend Dr. James Hoffman for anyone who wishes to not only see improvements in their fitness goals, but also to gain a good foundational education."
